Well I may be wrong. I just saw this article which says two-thirds of cows around the globe are at any time in a North-South alignment. The cows in this picture are facing South. http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-science/20080825/SCI.Cow.Compass/

I think cows tend to do that. They generally appear to keep their backsides to the wind.

very pleasing scene and great shot too. Interesting how the herd is facing the same direction.
