talsi - Aug 05, 2009 10:59 PM EDT Must be why I couldn't find this bird in my North Am. bird book
donwrob - Aug 03, 2009 07:39 AM EDT I'm going to go out on a limb here Alex. This is a young Red-headed Cardinal. I can find no other local birds for your area even close. How it got there? I don't know, maybe escaped from an aviary. But I'm only assuming you took this shot in the wild near your place. Heck, maybe you shot it at an aviary? Take a look at the pic I posted of an adult bird from Hawaii, the beak and coloring are exactly the same. Don

talsi - Aug 02, 2009 05:58 PM EDT Interesting bird - I used to get Red Headed Woodpeckers when I lived in Mi (none here in WNC>) and they are just beautiful However, I do not believe this is one as they don't have that mask around their eyes - and the bill doesn't look long enough to me
chriss35 - Aug 01, 2009 02:18 PM EDT Alex, Very nice image, I think this bird could be a Red-headed Woodpecker; 8-9in Year round Dark-red head, black-and-white abovewhite below, black tail. i came accross it in a South Florida Bird Book, thanks for sharing Chriss:)
donwrob - Aug 01, 2009 10:19 AM EDT Cool Alex. It sure looks like a Red-headed Cardinal, like the ones found in Hawaii. Interesting. Don
