The Flume

About This Image
The flume or raceway in an old dam next to a former gypsum mine/plaster factory. This dates to the 19th century, and was used to power the factory. The Oatka creek is a clear, placid trout stream in the summer, and this raceway carries the full flow of the creek, sometimes only a trickle. But in the early spring, snow melt fills the creek, moving rapidly to the Genesee River, and eventually Lake Ontario and the Atlantic Ocean.
