About This Image

My wife and I left Illinois for Vacaville, California, a distance of 2,020 miles, last Friday (July 28th). About the same time a friend, named Lori, and her family left Arizona for here too. Lori didn't make it. While driving home they were in an accident and her car left the road, rolling over five times. Lori was seriously injured, her husband, Scott, escaped with minor injuries. Her two children Chad, age 11, and Ashley, age 15, were both killed in the accident. I made this for Lori, one of the nicest people I know, please remember her in your prayers.

Tears In Heaven

Carol Gebert - Jan 28, 2014 06:10 PM EDT
I am sincerely sorry for the tragedy your friends went through. I did not know the story connected with the picture, when I fell in love with it ... and wanted to use it for a grief recovery book cover. Is using it for a book cover something that you would allow? I am not a famous author, but I do have great hope for this book ... because it is needed. I will look forward to hearing back from you. Sincerely, Carol Gebert

This happened last year right around my B-day. I hope that there is some bit of happiness in Lori and Scott's lives at this time. The pain of losing your children will never cease, I'm sure. Love to you both. Luana

My heart goes out to Lori and her family. What a heart renching story. I can see a wild face when this picture is small almost like a blowfish underwater. Nice image. I will keep Lori and her family in my prayers. ~Jeannette~

A moving and beautiful tribute to the two angels. My heart goes out to Lori and her husband. I don't think that kind of loss can ever be healed. God bless them and those who love them.

Doug, I missed this before. It's a beautiful tribute and speaks volumes to both your insight and Lori and Scott's family. Now that I've met my birth mom I thank her for my life every time we get together - seeing this reminds me that for her, I was an "invisible angel" - for 58 years, and it shows in her home. Bless you for your wonderful gift to the family.

Doug to Lori Scott and you and your family my deepest sympathies. This photo and the title With the Dark Clouds surounding the light in the sky and the 2 buttiflies flying up and up. Very symbolic photo, calming and sad all at the same time. Im sure Eric Claptan would be honnered to have the title of his song used with such an amaising piece of art. Tears In Heaven was the song I had played at my daughter funeral in 1992. it does not get easier the tears just get further apart. Lori and Scott now have 2 special angels watching over them. Thinking of you all. God Bless

Hi Stephanie, Thank you for your kind comments. Truly a tragic situation for all concerned. I hope Lori and Scott can recover from their loss. The huge amount of community support made me think of the line from the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" where the angel Clarence says "Each life touches so many lives."

How very heartbreaking. I am so sorry for your friends loss. I can't even imagine the grief they must be dealing with. You photo is a beautiful tribute, I am sure they will always cherish it. Stephanie

As a follow up, my wife and I attended the funeral services at the church, there were about 1,000 people there. Many had to stand, there weren't enough seats. Lori and Scott were a little overwhelmed by the community support. Many young people, friends of Ashley and Chad, stood up and spoke of them.

The funeral service for the children is scheduled for this friday.

Hi Mary and Evelyn, Thank you both for your thoughts. The title of this was taken from the Eric Clapton song and seemed fitting. Sadly, Lori called me a few months ago and scheduled some outdoor business card photos. On the day we were to take them it rained, so she called and said she would reschedule later. She said She wanted to set up some family photos to. We never did them. Doug

What a great friend and lovely photo for a family who lost so much...as I wipe the tears from my eyes and think of my kids, this family will be in my prayers too...
Guest - Aug 06, 2006 03:34 PM EDT
Along with the photo the title immediately caught my eye because I've been playing an Eric Clapton album that has this song that he wrote in 1991 from the pain he suffered from the death of his 4 yr old son who fell from the 53rd story window in his mother's New York condo. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and your family too as you go through this difficult time. The photo is a very beautiful and meaningful tribute.

Hi Lee, Thank you for your kind comments. The first of five scheduled fundraisers, a car wash, was held yesterday at Ashley's High School, and was extremely successful. For those interested you can read the article here: http://www.thereporter.com/news/ci_4143998 Doug

Now the title makes sense. As if the photo itself didn't give me a catch in my throat (in its absolute beauty) knowing of the heartbreak for everyone involved gives me goosebumps and makes my heart cramp for the sadness of it all.
Guest - Aug 05, 2006 06:53 PM EDT
Thank you all for your prayers and kind words. Lori has been released from the hospital in Phoenix and has returned to Vacaville. The family doesn't have much money so the community has organized several fund raisers to help them out. I delivered an 11x14" framed copy of this, and a donation, to her co-workers. A tragic event.

What a beautiful tribute,my prayers go out to Lori.

So very sad and tragic to lose their children.I will be praying for Lori recovery. Carol
Guest - Aug 04, 2006 06:56 PM EDT
what a tragedy! Saying "I'm so very sorry" sounds so helpless. A person doesn't know what to say. Too terrible to contemplate. I will certainly have them onmind and in prayer. How very sad/tragic, to lose both their children.
