About This Image

Nature can be cruel as well as beautiful, and this poor fox is suffering from mange, according to a vet friend. It comes into our garden from time to time, often shaking, and always scratching and biting itself. It sounds awful, but every time I see it I regret that it is still alive, just to suffer so much.

good morning Steve. I didn't see these before - thank you for mentioning them to me in your com ment. I'm impressed by the comments this has triggered. It's obvious that there are many animal lovers in TLF with valid insights. In my transporting days I once saw a beautiful eland - whohad been unable to clear a rancher's barbed wire fence. I was unable to stop and get a picture, but it still haunts me. In New Mexico there is no barbed wire, livestock is 'free range' with cattle grids discouraging access to roads. Wildlife and controlled livestock live without fear of barbed wire. Your fox with the mange is an unavoidable fact of life. And heartbreaking. Thank you for the wake up call. Vicki

Tania, you've hit the nail on the head, as they say. Life isn't all cute, and I do think photography should reflect that sometimes.

Steve I think you have said it before to others. This is not a pretty photo but it is a part of life. I think you have captured his pain very well. This is a Nat Geo reality check photo thank you for sharing. I to hope the poor thing is nolonger suffering.

How sad.

Thanks for your concern, Carol, Sparkle and Lorraine. I haven't seen the fox lately, so I'm praying he's been relieved of his suffering. The problem about getting someone to trap or tranquilise him is that I never saw him for more than a few minutes at a time, so he'd always be gone by the time any rescuers got here.

I have seen an animal with mange, it's a terrible thing, I dont think there is a cure, but on going treatment, the kindest thing would be for it to be put down, do you have animal care groups over there that could trap and do this kindly, a sad sight.

Yes that poor fox. Can someone put it out of its misery? Can they tranquilize it and maybe treat the mange?
