There are very few of these plants this year as compared to past years. The plant is commonly known as the Nightshade, a relative of the tomato.

we knew that as "deadly nightshade" as kids in England, I believe. My young brother ate some of the berries once, and had to be rushed to Emerg, as the purple berries are poisonous. Seem to recall that there was also a "woody nightshade" which was similar but wasn't considered poisonous.
