About This Image

A sailboat and container ship transit the Oakland Inner Harbor. Couldn't help but notice the obvious contrast between the colorful spinnaker and the dark hulk of the container ship Wan Hai 505 as they sailed into the harbor.

Just beautiful shot. I hope you entered a photo into our red and orange on black and white contest that has already ended though.

Thanks for your comment, Alandra. The technique is fairly simple: Select an area you want to remain with color then desaturate the rest (inverse). You can also do this with other effects like sharpening, brighteing, bluring, etc. When doing a portrait, I will sometimes Gausian blur the background to remove distracting elements. I will have to submit a sample as another variation of the technique.
