About This Image

Redwinged blackbird showing his red epaulets/breeding plumage, on his shoulders/wings as he flies away from the branch. He's a very handsome bird and has several lady blackbirds in his harem, so it seems. The females look nothing like these males, - they are brown and speckled with an apricot colour shoulder flash.

thanks to all of you for the nice comments, much appreciated, -- Golda, Lorraine, Ikka, Alfresco (Bruce), Anne, Jas and Carol. Smiling at Bruce's "rusty hinge" comment. Reminds me of the description I heard sometime ago, of the nuthatch's sound "like a rusty tin horn". Know what Golda means, as always think of the rusty tin horn now, when hearing the nuthatches here, and will most likely think of the rusty hinge when hearing the blackbirds.

A very graceful shot Alandra. These birds do have a beautiful call, and now thanks to Alfresco, I will hear it always, as a "rusty hinge".Thanks for your alternative view of this bird.

Great shot! One of our favorite birds, we watch for them to return in the spring, and listen for their distinctive "rusty hinge" call. Bruce

Alandra, the coloring on this bird is stickingly wonderful. Great capture of the wing spread of the blackbird.
