About This Image

The desert is coming alive with colors. This is one of the first blooms I found on a Prickly Pear Cactus. Prickly pear cacti typically grow with flat, rounded platyclades that are armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike spines called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. Many types of prickly pears grow into dense, tangled structures. Like all true cactus species, prickly pears are native only to the Western hemisphere; however, they have been introduced to other parts of the globe.

Hi Ann, Thanks again very much for checking out my photos... Most of the cactus all bloom this time of year, the prickly pears are just now starting. Each platyclade has from just a few to around eight on each one. The older and larger ones can have thirty or more platyclades. I have a photo of one with tons of buds that I will upload tomorrow for ya.

Nice capture of this beautiful bloom, Alan. How many blooms to each platyclades, Alan? Is it a spring flowering cactus? Interesting information.
