About This Image

The Polar Star; a 'cruise' ship, calling in at Ny Alesund, Sptizbergen which is situated, approximately, 600 miles south of the North Pole. The rugged, but spectacularly scenic island of Spitsbergen is civilisation's most northerly outpost and Ny Alesund is the most northerly settlement on it.
To go ashore, you have to be taken by ship's tender, or, dingy. It can be very bleak here and sometimes the ships have to by pass this port because the weather makes it impossible to get close enough to port - ice bergs get in the way!

Yes, Alandra, very stark scenery and very COLD! An experience I wouldn't have missed for the world. :)

this is very interesting, Jas, as others have already mentioned. Very unusual and rather stark scenery, and also striking and lovely in its own way. Had heard of Spitzbergen but didn't realize where it is. Great shot.
