About This Image

Northern Flicker, beautiful bird, one of our favorites in the garden. Heard it calling as I sat at the window, - was surprised to hear it so early, as thought they usually appear here in early fall. Anyway, shortly after, this one appeared at our feeder and was helping itself to peanuts. It didn't stay long and we haven't seen it or heard it since.
captured from open front window with telephoto lens.

thankyou Beverly for the nice comments. We noticed when walking our Labs in the "owl area" that it seemed that feathers from these flickers were often on the ground, when they first arrive here each year, - so I think the predator birds kill them. The problem is that the flickers "announce" themselves so well, by hollering from the treetops, so guess they are "sitting ducks".

Great shot. Don't see too many of these birds here.

thanks for the nice comments, Mary. Yes, you are right about that, - just happened to still be sitting there at the window when the flicker appeared. He was watching me, as you can see here. The image has lost something in the compression, as it's quite sharp in my version, with a lot of detail in its feathers, I was a bit sorry at how it showed up here.

many thanks, Carol, Alex and Doug. Have never captured a photo of a flicker before either, so was happy to get these that day. Hope he returns. Haven't heard a sound of him since.
