Guest - May 17, 2007 09:01 PM EDT Thanks for that informative piece of information Steve. Hmmmm, now I am wondering what those 'mushrooms' actually were that I cooked for hubby last night!! I haven't seen him all day!!!...........just kidding :)
Guest - May 17, 2007 07:18 PM EDT WOW!! very nice shot,I hope you didnt take a nibble on it.lol
Guest - May 17, 2007 08:29 AM EDT Cindy, Amanita muscaria forms a mycorrhizal association with the roots of conifers, which is why it appears close to such trees. Golda is right that this is a poisonous species, although by no means the most deadly. Another Amanita sp known as the Death Cap, and its close relation, the Destroying Angel, are much more deadly. A single one of those in a mushroom dish for a family would kill everyone eating it. Symptoms only appear after 24 hours or so, by which time it is too late to do anything about it, and death is both inevitable and unpleasant! Hope that cheered you up!!
Guest - May 16, 2007 06:16 PM EDT Thanks Golda for that information. I've noticed that they seem to thrive under or around our pine plantations, but have also noticed many other varietys in clumps around the farm. Autumn must have the ideal weather conditions for them all at the moment. Thank you.
Guest - May 16, 2007 03:14 PM EDT Cindy,I just did a little research on this shroom, and Don is correct. It is also known by the name Amanita Muscaria, and used as a hallucinogenic.Very deadly poisonous, only Shaman need apply to use this cute little toadstool. It is also interesting to note that this mushroom has been used quite extensivly in popular culture for a number of things. You just got to love that google...
Guest - May 16, 2007 05:40 AM EDT They are pretty Don, and yes the colours are beautiful km. This one was about the size of an egg but they develope quickly to the size of the larger one I posted up, in about 3 days. Thank you both for looking and your comments.
Guest - May 16, 2007 04:36 AM EDT Beautiful color. I have never seen one of these in our area.
Guest - May 16, 2007 03:30 AM EDT It is very pretty, but not one to eat for sure. If I remember correctly it is a fly agaric (sp?) I believe. But, just a guess without looking it up. Don
