About This Image

Killdeer,I believe,(type of Plover) captured from open vehicle window, across from the heron's nesting area.
First time we'd ever seen this bird. Very pretty with a red ring around it's eyes.

It put on a distraction display for us, by fanning out its tail and crouching on the ground. It probably had a nest nearby and was trying to distract us. Very cute.

thankyou Karen, for the nice comments. How sad about some horrid person killing those killdeer babies. Sickos in this world. Why on earth would anyone want to do such a thing, is beyond me.

Beautiful lighting really shows off the color. We have these in central Texas and they are ground nesters. We watched the parents walking their five babies near a school. A couple hours later we found that someone had killed all five babies. It was such a sad sight. They are famous for feigning a broken wing to lure a predator away from the nest.

thankyou Carol and Lorraine. We didn't realize these birds were in this region either, Carol. Someone recently sent a link in to another group, showing Kildeer pics, and I replied that I'd never seen them here, - and now suddenly we just saw this one :) I guess they are "waders" so live closer to the beaches. It was really pretty.
