About This Image

this hummingbird reminds me of a fairy, as it sees its reflection in the mirror ball, on our front patio.
Captured from open front window. The hummer was totally fascinated by its reflection today. On one visit, it spent about 5 minutes hovering right close to the ball. DH noticed it, and I didn't have the camera at hand, - so rushed to get camera & change lenses and it was still there, hovering around the mirror ball when I returned to the window, so this was one of the first images that I captured. It returned at least 3 more times while I sat there, but didn't stay as long as the first visit.
We have never had the hummingbirds remain here this late. It's cooling off quite a lot at nights now too, which is unusual for August.

Wow, saw this again and it is simply amazing. One of the finest on TLF. The quality of the light and detail is awesome. Best of all is that amazing pose. Love it.

Hi Alex D, thanks very much, good to see you here again. Hope all's well with you and yours. Glad you like the image. I cloned out a lot of fuchsia flowers from the background in this one.

Alandra, I figured out how to email you via this Web site. You should have an email from me in your inbox. :-)
mtemplet - Apr 21, 2008 11:50 PM EDT
Alandra, you mentioned contacting me via this group -- please do. I definitely want to buy a signed print of this image. I may buy two images, depending on cost. Your hummingbird images are the best I've ever seen, as you have captured their charm. Choosing the 2nd image is proving to be hard, -- I have narrowed it down to about 6(!). Please contact me soon, as my boyfriend's birthday is next month and I will want to have this/these professionally framed.
alandrapal - Apr 21, 2008 07:13 PM EDT
:) just noticed there are some duplicated messages Mtemplet, - I just hadn't scrolled back down thru them far enough, when I replied earlier about it. Not to worry, tho'. Alandra
alandrapal - Apr 21, 2008 07:11 PM EDT
thanks very much, Lookingup! happy you like the photo.
alandrapal - Apr 21, 2008 07:10 PM EDT
not to worry about duplicate messages, as so far none have shown up here :) Was interested to hear about the amazing number of hummingbirds that your boyfriend has visiting his feeders, - we have never had more than 4 or 5 here, in any one spring/summer season. Yes, by all means look at the other images of hummingbirds, there are many there. There is a way we can contact each other via this group, other than writing here, - will attempt this shortly.
mtemplet - Apr 21, 2008 06:49 PM EDT
We can proceed however you would like. I'm new to this site -- I joined to inquire on this photo. I didn't see any other way. If there is an established way to contact one another other than by blog, please let me know. I will think about the size, and I'd like to look at your other hummingbird images this evening, to see if I'd like to buy more than one.
Lookingup - Apr 21, 2008 06:29 PM EDT
Awesome!
mtemplet - Apr 21, 2008 06:27 PM EDT
sorry, apparently every time I refresh my screen, it resends my message(?). I won't refresh the screen anymore. I really would like to buy a print of this image for my boyfriend's birthday. He has 7 hummingbird feeders and makes their food everyday. Hundreds of hummingbirds feed there. He would absolutely love this image and I have been searching the Internet for paintings, photos, and other images of hummingbirds. No others have resonated with me as this one has. Thanks.
alandrapal - Apr 21, 2008 06:25 PM EDT
many thanks for your nice comments & interest, Mtemplet. What size print are you considering? I haven't sold any prints before, but it's very encouraging that you are interested in this. We can certainly discuss this privately. best wishes, Alandra

that's a very nice comment, WmPearl, thanks very much, - very encouraging : ) Am looking forward to capturing more images again this summer. We have one rufous female hummer here already, but no rufous males so far.
wmpearl - Mar 28, 2008 07:43 AM EDT
This is a very striking picture of a Hummer. I have a fair amount pictures of Hummers and anytime you can get a picture like this is a great achievement. bP

that's really nice of you, Larry, thanks very much for the great encouragement and compliments. This image was chosen as "Image of the Day" at some photo group last year (forget the name of it now :) No, I haven't sold any of the prints. I did license one image to an internet security company in London, UK earlier, - they wanted to use it on an invitation to one of their meetings at Canary Wharf (Reuters news agency is one of their clients), - so that made me pretty excited, and they did pay to use the image, plus they generously sent me a stack of the finished postcard sized invitations. But that's the extent of it. Thanks again. I love capturing images of the hummingbirds. The first rufous hummer this spring arrived back here on the 16th March, so am looking forward to getting some more photos soon.

Alandra, I'm so busy and I didn't see this wonderful work! It is really great, to me a masterpiece.
Guest - Oct 01, 2007 05:56 AM EDT
How on earth I missed this, I don't know but was browsing your gallery and whoa!! Such a special shot you have captured. Your mirror ball intrigues me so tomorrow I am going to hang my 'disco ball' in a tree and see if I can attract some hummers!! A likely story as we don't have hummers in NZ!!, oh well, maybe I'll try for the Bee Gee's! A great photo Alandra.

Hi Pam, good to see you here, thanks for the nice comments. We've had that mirror ball for about 6 years now, and some of the "silvering" has come off, due to rain I guess. We bring it in during winter tho'. They're available in various colours, - gold, silvery blue, silvery red etc, but we like the silver one best.
Guest - Sep 09, 2007 11:26 PM EDT
That is really cool, Alandra! I have not seen a reflcting bll before.Pam

Hi Beverly, thanks for the nice comments. That's a cool take you have on it, re pinpointing on the globe where hummer will go :)
Guest - Sep 03, 2007 11:06 AM EDT
Neat shot - kinda reminds me of a world globe and the Hummer has just pinpointed where he will go.
Guest - Aug 30, 2007 03:30 PM EDT
thanks for the nice comments, Janice. It was comical to watch him, he was really pushing his beak towards the glass lots of times, I was hoping he wouldn't break his beak.
Guest - Aug 30, 2007 02:20 PM EDT
Great shot. I love the way the hummer looks as if he is trying to figure how to get in there, should he attack the other bird or no wait is that me in the reflection.
Guest - Aug 30, 2007 04:37 AM EDT
that's very encouraging, Tania, thanks so much. Am so pleased you like it, as it took ages to clone out all those red fuchsias in the background, lol, even between the hummer's legs, plus it was difficult trying to keep the "edge" of the ball sharp too :)
Guest - Aug 30, 2007 03:55 AM EDT
Alandra I think this would have to be my favourite of all your hummer photos. Beautiful
Guest - Aug 29, 2007 11:25 PM EDT
thanks so much, Anne, am glad you like it.
Guest - Aug 29, 2007 05:39 PM EDT
How very, very beautiful and the reflection is lovely Wonderful picture.
Guest - Aug 29, 2007 03:26 PM EDT
thanks very much, Karen, for the nice comments and info. That would be great if the winter is mild. glad you like the dark background, I cloned the fuchsias out of this one.
Guest - Aug 29, 2007 12:27 PM EDT
Gorgeous color, detail and composition. Love the dark contrasting background. Maybe they know something about the weather. According to the "Farmers Almanac", this winter is supposed to be mild in the NW.
