pwillis - Sep 26, 2010 02:56 AM EDT While living in L.A. I went on a road trip sometime in 2004 and somehow ended up in Jerome and The House of Joy. I've always had a very strong affection for Jerome ever since. I bought a T-Shirt while I was there that has a mining icon and the word "Jerome" on it and it's remained one of my "favorite old T's".
I didn't realize the The House of Joy had actually been a brothel and a restaurant in the years to come but tonight, I watched a movie entitled "Brothel" that I'd found on the Internet and became attracted to it because it was filmed in Jerome. It's got some great footage of Jerome although I would have liked to have seen more. Nonetheless, it goes into some detail about the House of Joy as it were, among other Jerome related history. I'm not certain how much is fact versus fiction but it started me on a search which led me to your website.
Food for thought . . . http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319115/
Have a great day and thanks for your great picture!

Guest - Nov 02, 2006 10:39 PM EDT A sad story: I have visited Jerome a couple of times recently. The "House of Joy" sign is still there, but it is now so weather beaten, I don't think it will make it through another winter. Meanwhile, I have found out some things about this site. Until recently (maybe a year or two ago), the House of Joy was listed in Conde Nast, or some such publication, as one of the 10 best restaurants in the U.S. Reservations were required months in advance. They even turned away a celebrity now and then. As I was walking the streets of Jerome, the other day, I stopped to read a little sign on the window of The House of Joy. The sign said that the restaurant is now closed due to a bicycle accident of one of the owners. It is now an antiques/collectibles shop, owned by the same people.
In the early days, it actually was a brothel. But, that was not so unusual in those days in Jerome. It was truly a wild and whooly town.
Guest - Mar 15, 2006 11:26 PM EDT Jules, I'm going to have to fall in there next time we go to Jerome. I just love that town.
Guest - Jan 24, 2006 12:37 AM EDT Fell quite by accident into The House of Joy on a trip to Jerome last Saturday. Fell madly in love. Pretty sure they won't let me move in, but oh, the hours i could spend perusing their whatnots.
Guest - Oct 31, 2005 05:03 PM EDT Marsha went to Jerome over the weekend, but I couldn't go. So, I still haven't been able to get into the House of Joy. Maybe in a few weeks, we'll go together.
sigh......
Guest - Oct 11, 2005 08:28 PM EDT I vote go on in. Just don't touch anything! LOL!
Guest - Aug 26, 2005 03:26 PM EDT You are right, Jocelynne. Maybe it is a Cat in the Hat store, whatever that is.
Guest - Jul 25, 2005 01:39 AM EDT PS They probably have really good burgers and fries! lol
Guest - Jul 25, 2005 01:38 AM EDT That looks like a Cat in the Hat hat like you can buy at the state fair. I love old signs!
Guest - May 14, 2005 12:33 PM EDT lol wow
Guest - May 13, 2005 09:38 PM EDT That's it! It's a candy shop! I'll have to go in there and get a candy cane next time I'm in Jerome.
Guest - May 13, 2005 12:26 PM EDT I thought that was a candy shop! I guess I was kinda right? lol (50 cent song..)
Guest - Apr 03, 2005 03:08 PM EDT Thanks Dud. I did take a look. Poor Joy. Looks like she took it hard. Good for her for completing a half marathon.
Guest - Mar 31, 2005 04:35 AM EDT If you want to see joy just look at this picture. The lady is named Joy.

Guest - Mar 31, 2005 04:26 AM EDT Just don't let Marsha hear you mention "Gary's House of Joy". She might get the wrong idea ... or the right idea.
Guest - Mar 31, 2005 04:10 AM EDT Hmmmm - I must have been having a bad red and white stocking day when I mixed up your names, Gary and Dud. I'm glad I "revisited" Gary's "House of Joy" to read all the good-natured banter - this photo is almost infective with the thoughts of satin, lace and hot wimmen trying to entice our menfolk!
Guest - Mar 30, 2005 05:12 PM EDT No problem. I am too crazy to not do it.
Guest - Mar 30, 2005 02:35 PM EDT OK Dud. I'll try to grab a pair of candy cane socks for you. But you have to post your picture wearing them. I want proof of your innocence!
Guest - Mar 30, 2005 04:06 AM EDT I am innocent and have no idea what you are talking about. I just thought candy cane socks would go nice with my Santa suit in December. I hope no child sees this. Oops!!
Guest - Mar 27, 2005 03:19 AM EDT Yeay. Let's lay the blame on him. That's OK. I was going to let you guys go in first, just to make sure it is safe.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 06:52 PM EDT Thanks for the invitation Gary,I think I better opt out of this tour.My wife says she would have to try on her new shoes and she ain't wearin no second hand shoes from that "shoe" store.LOL
I think Dud is trying to get us both in trouble.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 03:47 PM EDT Dudley, sorry you can't make it. Maybe I can get Whittler to come out here and tour the "shoe" store with me.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 02:14 PM EDT Not a problem, Joyce. I've made the same mistake. It's easy to do. I just figured you liked the photo, so that was the important part.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 11:48 AM EDT Attention!!!Gary, I am so very sorry. I thought it was Duds picture... from Whittlers post before mine! (Quote)Great shot, and a neat sign.I would vote "Yea", go for it.Like Dud says, live life.)))
Just seeing the name(Dud) messed me up!! Sorry.
I do love this picture as I have mentioned above.
Sorry again Gary! Please forgive me
Joyce
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 04:35 AM EDT I would love to come over and enter with you. Wish I could afford the trip to Arizona.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 04:33 AM EDT Well, OK. But you are going to have to go in there with me. That way I won't get into trouble all alone.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 04:18 AM EDT Who me? I wouldn't do that.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 03:10 AM EDT Oooh Dudley! You're gonna get me in trouble yet!
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 02:29 AM EDT I guess it depends who you take them off of.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 01:50 AM EDT Dud, I think you've got it. I'll just mosey on in and get me some of them candy stripe socks! No harm in that is there?
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 12:59 AM EDT I did not take the shot. It was Gary.
Guest - Mar 24, 2005 12:08 AM EDT I can hear the can-can music all the way up here - great shot, Dud!
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 11:00 PM EDT Gary. I think it sells red and white candy striped socks.
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 10:57 PM EDT Oh my God Gary, you better stay out of there, my wife just told me thats not a shoe store.
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 10:06 PM EDT Well, I'll have to sneak in. Otherwise, Marsha will want to have a word with me.
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 07:42 PM EDT Ya live life for sure. Looking at that sign I can just picture everone inside wearing them crazy socks!!Hahaha!!
Oh I love it Dud!!!
Joyce
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 07:41 PM EDT Gary I say just pass it by, head for home real quick.
I do like the Old Sign.
Carol
Ps. now for a little dicussion with Whittler. LOL
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 06:02 PM EDT Great shot, and a neat sign.I would vote "Yea", go for it.Like Dud says, live life.
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 01:54 PM EDT I think it is pretty tame in there now. But that's not how it used to be.
Guest - Mar 23, 2005 01:43 PM EDT Interesting sign. Live life, go in.
