About This Image

Originally one tiny island, over the years, using landfill, the island was formed into an 'E' shape, water vessels arriving and departing between the prongs of the 'E'.

As the present-day ferry pulls in to dock alongside the Main Building, the Ferry Terminal Building is directly in front and the Hospitals are to the left - more ornate structures. On the far side of the hospitals, is the third branch of the 'E' with many other buildings whose purpose I'm not sure of - possibly employee lodging or perhaps family lodgings, as the main building dormitories kept the sexes separated.

These hospitals will also be restored as funding becomes available.

Hi May - I graduated in '64 - not too far behind you! The Circle Line now has the contract for Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty - at least through October, when there will be a transition. A nickel, it isn't any more!!!! But still reasonable by today's rates. (I remember when my beloved San Francisco cable cars were a dime!!!!!). Make sure you take the time to go - the records even show the shops they sailed over on. You won't regret it - go early so you can spend some time going through the archives as well. Vicki

Vicki - I just saw some photos of Ellis. All my great grands came through there. I am going back to SI for my 46th high school reunion and if I stay in the vicinity (I have 10 days) I might go over. Have you taken the SI Ferry? It used to be a nickel. It's a cheap cruise anyway. Great shot. May
