Fish Ladder at Oliver Mills Park
|
About This Image
These ruins near Middleboro, Massachusetts, date back to the 1600s when Mr Oliver operated a smithy from this site. Many years later, shovels were manufactured from this mill. Abandoned and left to fall into ruins, the state eventually gave it new life. Herring run up these waters to spawn, but their numbers are seriously dwindling. The state has now decreed that this site is off limits to fishermen while the herring are heading upriver. A fish ladder has been dreated to help the fish reach their spawning grounds.
It's quite a site to see - and the migration has only just started. We're working close by at the moment and can tell when there's an increase in the fish heading upstream by the amount of seagulls noisily seeking easy meals.
