I call this a dragon fly, but I've no idea if I'm technically correct! Perhaps any entomologists viewing can help me out!
Whatever it is, it's a fantastic shade of electric blue that looks almost like a flying spark.

Thanks Carol and Mike. And thanks Mike for checking my insect knowledge out - I obviously made a lucky guess! I think I was a bit closer than 5-6ft. In fact I nearly stood on it when I spotted it on the grass path I was walking down. I thought it would fly off long before I could get a shot in, but it decided to indulge me as I crouched down. I reckon I was probably about 4ft away, or maybe 3ft even. Steve
