About This Image

This is a cactus in bloom that I found out behind my house. Yellow blooms are not rare but there are not as many of them around.

Hey, I just discovered this beautiful cactus flower. The color and lighting are perfect. It does look similar to my picture but that one was on a prickly pear cactus. They are so lovely and delicate looking. Thanks for the plug.

Just found this photo. What a beautiful blossom. You captured the colors of the bloom and also the texture of the barbs on the cactus. Great!

Hi Alandra, If you want some of our desert weeds I can send you as many as you want LOL.. The blooms on most cactus do not have much of a scent. I guess all they need out here is some color to attract the insects. There not into pretty smells, they like pain and dirt :)

back for further comment, Alan. Interesting to read all that you wrote about these chollas, as have never seen them in real life. Also, I just wondered if a nice scent wafted thru the air from them, - didn't want you to get tooo near lol.

Hi May, yep that is a Cholla cactus, I should have added that to the description. We also call them jumping cactus, you just need to walk by them and it seems like they jump out and get you. You also have to watch while walking around them, the little ball like parts are always laying around on the ground and will get on your shoes. The little chipmunks use them to protect there under ground homes by placing them all around there homes leaving a little path to there door. I have a photo of one of there homes and will try and find it. I have been out here in the desert for a long time and have great respect for those cactus. I have taken them off my boots many times with a stick.

Now, NOBODY needs to poke a nose into cholla (I'm sure it's cholla), and don't brush up against them, either, because the segments break off and stick into clothing, your dogs, horses, etc. They are very painful, and also home to cactus wrens, lizards and neat things that creep and crawl and need protection.

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful comments, I'm glad you liked my photo :) Hey Golda I usually do my desert walking in the mornings when it cooler. I think I shot this one around 10am. Don I noticed that Karen Moen has a closer shot of the same bloom but with a bee on it, look at the similar images on the right, Karen's photo is there. Alandra you know I have never really stuck my nose down by them, those tips of the blooms are sharp. I think they just have the smell of a plant, with no strong smell of there own. I'll give one a sniff the next time I find one.

Very pretty cactus flower Alan. With all that pollen, it's hard to believe you caught it without any bees or bugs in it. Nice! Don

This a beautiful composition with perfect framing. The cactus flower strongly resembles a poppy.
