Guest - Oct 14, 2005 02:54 PM EDT Hi, Alandra. Thanks for your comment. Using my Smithsonian Birds of Texas Book, this has the coloration described for the Great Blue heron, including the reddish "pants", the bill and face color and the black and white streaks on the neck, and the dark legs. It doesn't have the long plumes on the sides of the head seen during breeding season. So, that's what I used for the ID.
Guest - Oct 14, 2005 01:39 PM EDT is this a Great Blue Heron, Karen? It looks a bit different to the GB herons in our area. have never noticed the brown colouring on "ours", nor the white "mottling" on the necks. now you've got me wanting to take a closer look at the herons around here : )
