Guest - Feb 24, 2005 02:21 PM EDT Thank you for the great comments. THe rock color extremes at that moment were due to the storm. Just before the hills went from an all over tannish color to greay. When the first huge clouds passed (in the photo), the sun was sinking so the clouds kept the foreground grey while the sun gabbed the higher hills in the background. We made it into the visitor center just in time where everyone left their tables in the cafeteria to watch the magnificent instantaneous color changes. Later we were treated to a mind-blowing lightning display.
If you're hikers, there are free campgrounds for tents and smaller self-contained RVs in the park where there's a better chance of seeing buffalo up close.
The west side of the Badlands has smoother, more rounded hill surfaces with incredible color.
