About This Image

While out in the desert I finally got a shot of this small black colored bird. I see them all of the time but they are really hard to get a close photo of. I love the hairdo... There was a blanket of clouds giving the background the white. The large view is a little better.
With help from Don and Chriss I know it's name and a lot more about them "Thanks"... I forgot to mention that you can only see the white stripes on there wings when they are flying. 'Phainopepla'. A silky flycatcher, but specializes in eating berries and mistletoe. Males are dark, glossy, purplish black; white on primaries obvious in flight; females all dark gray, with white wing bars; crest front. Information taken from 'Field Guide to California'.

Hi Beverly, Bruce, Carol, Don, and Chriss :) Thanks very much for your nice comments and for all of the help identifying this one. I have a few bird sites but I look and look and most of the time can't figure out what the birds are.. I will update the name and info on this soon. Hey Don that sure is a hard one to remember, I'm trying to pronounce it ROFL.. If it catches flies I'll support it all the way :) Thanks Chriss for the description that fits it perfect. I forgot to add about seeing the white bars on it's wings when it's flying.. I think I might get a better shot when my "ten million candle power" flash arrives :)

OK. Got it! It is called a 'Phainopepla'. A silky flycatcher, but specializes in eating berries and mistletoe. No wonder I couldn't remember the name huh?

Hi Alan. Cool shot! Last spring I photographed these same birds in Southern AZ. I remember having a hard time identifing them. I finally found their name, but sadly now I can't remember it or find it again! LOL! I'll keep looking. Don

Good job getting the details and not just a silhouette against the light background. Also nicely composed.
