A Cute Phainopepla
|
About This Image
While out in the desert I finally got a shot of this small black colored bird. I see them all of the time but they are really hard to get a close photo of. I love the hairdo... There was a blanket of clouds giving the background the white. The large view is a little better.
With help from Don and Chriss I know it's name and a lot more about them "Thanks"... I forgot to mention that you can only see the white stripes on there wings when they are flying. 'Phainopepla'. A silky flycatcher, but specializes in eating berries and mistletoe. Males are dark, glossy, purplish black; white on primaries obvious in flight; females all dark gray, with white wing bars; crest front. Information taken from 'Field Guide to California'.
